Supercomputer on the go!

Ever since Final Cut Pro made its début, non-linear video editors have screamed to have the power to edit in the field. The G3 PowerBook truly made this a reality. However, the G3 still lacked the punch that editors were clamoring for. With the introduction of the latest G4 equipped PowerBooks, video editors have a new friend in the business.

Here are a few reasons why every serious video professional should consider adding a G4 PowerBook to their arsenal of video editing tools.

Speed:

Yes, it has been said many times before but we’ll say it again – the G4 is blazingly fast! Not only is it fast but very efficient at what it does best – crunch data. What makes a G4 a supercomputer? For starters, the G4 can process over 1 billion floating-point operations a second otherwise known as a gigaflop. Traditional x86 microprocessors have yet to break this barrier in chip design. Moreover, Altivec 128-bit vector processing technology called the Velocity Engine has been placed on the chip extending the capabilities of the G4 to accelerate data-intensive processing required by high-end video applications. Editors will find this of great importance since Final Cut Pro and many other applications have been optimized to take advantage of Altivec processes reducing production time while increasing their bottom line. Final Cut Pro operating under Altivec is up to 60% faster than the G3 processor and well above standard PC microprocessors. With the latest G4 PowerBook, Apple has added a level 3 cache at 1MB and a level 2 cache at 256K all on a 133MHz system bus with up to a 800MHz G4 processor. (I feel the need for SPEED!)

Screen:

Apple didn’t skimp here! At 15.2 inches, the new G4 PowerBook incorporates a TFT widescreen active-matrix display that is by far the most elegant on the market. It supports millions of colors at 1280-by-854-pixel resolution at a 3:2 aspect ratio using the ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 w/32MB DDR SDRAM. This makes the screen wide enough to hold every Final Cut Pro editing control on one screen without being cramped. Video professionals will waste no time at using this extra space.

Furthermore, editors can double their workspace back at the office by connecting their existing monitors to the G4 PowerBook. The built in DVI output allows the use of an extra digital monitor and the PowerBook screen all at the same time. With the supplied DVI to VGA adapter, you can plug in conventional analog displays. Use your external monitor for your editing or graphics work and the PowerBook monitor for your tools. When space is at a premium, Apple has a solution!

Connectivity:

The newest PowerBook comes with all the amenities that a video professional could ask for in such a small package. While the PowerBook comes in at an amazing 1-inch thick, Apple didn’t shave off the necessary features that you’ll need to connect your devices. While other PC manufactures leave out essential internal ports making you attach clunky peripheral connectors that create clutter and hassles, Apple intuitively left them alone.

Built into every G4 PowerBook you’ll find a 56K V.90 modem, 10/100/1000 BASE-T Ethernet (thats Gigabit Ethernet!), BlueTooth compatibility (with optional adapter), FireWire, USB, Type I/II PC Card/CardBus slot, DVI. VGA, and S-Video output, built-in microphone, and stereo sound output. Why so important you ask? As a professional, you expect a company to give you what you need in a simple integrated package. The G4 PowerBook does this!

Expandability:

While the G4 Desktop remains supreme for expandability, the G4 PowerBook does allow video professionals to beef up on some very important components. As a video professional you need all the RAM you can get – right? While most PC laptops are held at 512 MB of RAM, the G4 PowerBook comes with room for a whopping 1 gigabyte of PC133 SDRAM, enough to make editing on the road a gratifying experience.

Networking on the go? Add an AirPort Card for $99.00 and you now have the capability to work in the wireless world wherever AirPort services are available. No clunky PCMCIA cards here like the Wintel world is used to! Everything is internal and out of the way as it should be. In fact, if your office needs a network and you don't have the time, room, or money to lay cable – AirPort is the answer!

Hard drive expansion has an obvious limitation but when you consider 1-inch thick and the ability to choose from 30, 40 or a whopping 60GB 5400RPM Ultra ATA/66 drive to hold your video edits that's incredible! Add some FireWire drives and you now have unlimited potential to edit in the field. Included with the G4 PowerBook is a slot-loading Combo drive that can read DVDs at 8x, CDs at 24x, and writes CD-R/CD-RW discs at 8x.

Portability:

If you dread lugging around a heavy laptop on your video shoots or you've held off purchasing one because you assume you'll have to wait to edit back in the office, now you don't have an excuse. The G4 PowerBook is not only compact; its bombproof as well. True to its name, Titanium is used to make it light, sleek, attractive, and capable of taking some serious scuff. Weighing in at a trim 5.3 pounds and a new ergonomically designed case measuring at13.5x9.5x1 inches, the small footprint allows you to slip the machine into your bag without making it an aggravating episode after a long days work.

Take the G4 PowerBook with you anywhere. The 5-hour battery life is sure to please in those tight situations where power cords are not an option. Better yet, take two or three batteries swapping them in and out on the fly for a full day of editing in the field. You can even use the Energy Saving Control panel to make the G4 perform at a level that conserves energy yet give you the power you need.

Need to impress a client? No problem. The DVD slot-loading drive accompanied by the widescreen display, gives you the, video professional, a unique and clever way to dazzle your clients. If for example, you invest in a G4 Desktop with Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, and the new DVD Combo drive, you can now edit, burn and share your creations on DVD and ensure your clients know you mean business. The G4 PowerBook gives you the power to make an impression anywhere you go.
