Closet Mac Fans – Come out come out wherever you are!

It seems to me that to be a true computer user, you have to ingest bytes of data just like a bowl of Captain Crunch. I mean, come on, let’s face it, when it comes to knowing computers there are those who live and breathe computer technology as if their very existence depended upon it and then there are those who profess the religion blindly.

I believe all true lovers of “superior” technology know good design and bad design in hardware and software when they see it, especially when they use it! Having said that, an unfortunate thing happens when your typical PC enthusiast meets up with an Apple enthusiast. The lines are drawn and the stage set for a cataclysmic confrontation as insurgency and counter intelligence seek to dismantle the foe at hand. Generally, it starts with the indoctrinated PC “Microsoft” agent using a slant like this – “Hey what’s that, a paper weight?” How about this one, “My grandma could use that!” or even more profound, “You can’t do anything with that, it’s a toy…..what a piece of junk.” On the opposite side your Mac enthusiast responds with, “Get real, you un-schooled shlop!” or “Yeah, how many times has your computer crashed today?” The confrontation usually ends with finger pointing and a slew of insults that only canker a fractured camaraderie of technology dependence.

What isn’t apparent is that most PC users are jealous even though they spew “Anti-Mac” slogans faster than you can download a pirated MP3 file from the net. That’s “net” not .NET! I think most PC users fall into this category. I like to call these folks “Closet Mac Fans!” These “Closet Mac Fans” are jealous of what they can’t have. I believe it comes down to having fun and an efficient way of computing - in other words, getting things done! And besides, why shouldn’t computing be fun? Maybe die-hard PC users are just uncreative and the Mac makes them feel inferior. I haven’t seen any data to support this theory yet, but I’ll look into it. One thing is for sure: “Closet Mac Fans” sure are outspoken about the new blazingly fast G4 machines that are breaking into every competitors sales profits not to mention standard PC design speculations. I can’t blame them. I would be upset, too!

Truthfully, the jealousy comes from knowing that Apple is thriving and is outpacing its PC counterparts in product design and quality software offerings at an astonishing pace. Once OS X (that’s 10, not x) takes root a whole new era will dawn and the battle will begin all over again. I’m not sure whether Windows XP will be up to the task to take X head-on but it could be another reason for MS users to contemplate their allegiances. I look forward to some of my closest “Closet Mac Fans” jumping the Microsoft ship to join what they have been longing to join all along – the Apple phenomenon!

I therefore suggest again that “Closet Mac Fans” really do like what they see but deny their true deeply held feelings in the open. But, you never know what will happen in this crazy technology driven world of ours! In the future, maybe things will change and we’ll start seeing PC addicts wearing Microsoft t-shirts in public proclaiming their love for Bill Gates? Who knows, maybe Microsoft XP and Win2000 stickers will start appearing on car windshields? Not a chance ;-)

If you believe in it, show it!
